Belhaven Blazer, Kara Bland, Helps Take Team to SSAC Championship Win

2012 Mar 9

The Belhaven Blazers women's basketball team claimed its first Southern States Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday night defeating fifth ranked Lee University 64-54 at the Forum in Rome, GA. Kara Bland from St.Charles, MO is a junior on the Belhaven University women's basketball team and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine.

This win was the second conference championship for the women's program. The last conference championship was in 1982 when the Blazers won the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship.

Belhaven Head Coach Billy Evans said, "This game was a great team effort all the way around. We played outstanding, intense defense and held one of the best offenses in the country to just over 30 percent shooting from the field. Our team turned in another great performance and everyone made big plays and shots down the stretch. Some key baskets were hit in the second half that secured the game for us."

The Belhaven Blazers will square off against Westminster College (Utah) in the opening round of the 2012 NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship on March 14th in Frankfort, Ky.

Belhaven stands among the select Christian colleges and universities that offer a unique general core curriculum encouraging the development of a personal worldview. The university believes a Christian worldview is a key to preparing men and women academically and spiritually to serve Christ Jesus in their careers, in human relationships, and in the world of ideas.

Founded in 1883, Belhaven University now serves over 3,000 students from campuses in Jackson, Memphis, Orlando, Houston, Chattanooga, Atlanta and online, offering traditional undergraduate degrees, graduate and adult degree programs, and online degree programs.
